Indonesia Hopes Myanmar Will Hold Credible Referendum

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesia has responded positively the Myanmar military junta's plan to hold a referendum and general election.
“But we hope that these two major plans can be carried out credibly,” said Nur Hassan Wirajuda, Foreign Affairs Minister, when hosting the United Nations' special envoy for Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, at his office on Thursday (21/2).
According to Hassan, the two agenda are a good respond from the military junta in carrying out the road map to democracy there.
“We also hope that the process can be observed by the international community,” he said.
After the meeting that lasted for more than an hour, Gambari said he had asked Indonesia to support the measured of the UN in the solving the Myanmar issue.
“There has been a common view regarding the road map heading to democracy,” he said.
