KPU Sets Election Schedule
Tuesday, 04 March, 2008 | 16:34 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The General Election Commission (KPU) will soon set the schedule and work program in preparing the 2009 General Election. “We'll create the regulation that explains the Legislative Member Election Decree,” said Abdul Hafiz Anshary, when contacted in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, yesterday (3/3).

KPU, said Hafiz, has already prepared 48 procedures and regulations that need to be adjusted to be in line with the Legislative Member Election Decree. “We hope the President will put the decree into effect soon,” he said.
Hafiz estimates that the 2009 Election stages will begin in April. The agenda covers finalization of the voter data, registration and verification of political party and the registration and verification of the Regional Representative Council (DPD).

Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto asked KPU to prepare the implementation of the 2009 Election. KPU must explain and socialize the new provision. “KPU must soon perform its duty,” he said at the Home Affairs Department.

Mardiyanto explained the discussion of the Legislative Member Election Bill was tough because political parties have their own interests, while the government must improve the election quality. Therefore, Mardiyanto along with Justice and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalata and State Secretary Hatta Rajasa consulted the House of Representatives' (DPR) decision with the President.
