Agus Martowardojo: Fit and Proper Test for BI Governor
Tuesday, 11 March, 2008 | 14:56 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Agus Martowardojo is having a fit and proper test for central bank governor selection at the banking commission, House of Representatives (DPR), at 10.25 (Western Indonesian Time).

He is also president director of Bank Mandiri, and he presented his paper entitled “Strengthening the Role of the Indonesian Central Bank as a Monetary Stability Observer Focusing on Sustainable Economic Development”.

The presentation was divided into three parts: development of the world economy, the impact of the global economy on Indonesia, and a strategic plan for BI as a reliable monetary institution. Agus looked tense during the test, and said that if he's chosen, he will gradually implement the program he has made, so it will not shock people.

“This is not a sudden program, but sustained and one of considerable balance. Besides, BI is a strong institution already”, Agus said at the DPR Jakarta.

Agus thought the Indonesian economy is still in a positive momentum but must be careful about the sub-prime mortgage crisis and the commodity price.

The fit and proper test was led by Awal Kusuma, and attended by 29 members of the banking commission. The process was also attended by entire board of directors of PT Bank Mandiri Tbk, and journalists from the broadcast and printed media.
