Independent Candidate for Central Java Governor Election Closed
Wednesday, 26 March, 2008 | 14:55 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Semarang: It is impossible to have an independent candidate for the Central Java Governor election. Head of the Regional General Elections Commission (KPUD) for Central Java, Fitriyah, said they cannot accommodate independent candidates since this is not regulated yet.

“The KPUD can work on it if Regulation No. 32 year 2004 is revised,” Fitriyah said today in Semarang. A limited revision is being executed but it is not yet officially regulated.

However, Fitriyah said that in the near future, the revised Regulation No. 32/2004 will be launched, then KPU will be ordered to receive applications from candidates.

Fitriyah claimed that the Central Java KPUD is technically ready to have an independent candidate. “A special budget is prepared to accommodate independent candidates,” she said.

Starting today until 1 April, the Central Java KPUD will open registration for gubernatorial candidates.
