President: Election System Should Be Easy

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that general election system is not effective. A long time between the legislative and Presidential election will be tiring for everyone. “I felt it in the 2004 election,” said President Yudhoyono in his speech at the consolidation forum for regional leaders and regional legislators at the National Defense Institution yesterday.

According to Yudhoyono, the recent system will cost a great deal. During the three months of election, April to July 2009, people will be divided. “They will become green, red, yellow, and blue,” he said.

Yudhoyono agrees with the participant's suggestion to simplify the election system. “It has to be discussed with the House of Representatives,” he said. “The Government cannot change it on their own.” The President did not explain further the ideal election system.

Meanwhile, head of special team for the Presidential election regulation drafting, Ferry Mursyidan Baldan, said that it is impossible to arrange the election schedule. “It will be possible in 2014,” said Ferry at the House yesterday.

Ferry said the election will still be costly because it has to be done twice. There must be more than two pairs of Presidential and vice presidential candidates.

The special team for Presidential election regulation drafting will require the candidates to have 25 percent of the votes.
