Vice President Admits the Slow Growth of Islamic Banking
Wednesday, 16 April, 2008 | 16:11 WIB
TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla admits that Islamic or syariah banking shows slow growth. The transactions only grow at two to three percent. Trust in Syariah banking is still low.
There are 40 banks using the syariah model in their transactions. Kalla said syariah banking should have more ideas to attract more customers. “All transactions allowed by religious regulation is categorized as a Syariah transaction,” he said.
Kalla reminded syariah banking to carry out everything correctly. It is not easy for syariah banking to maintain the customer's trust 100 percent since it has to be 100 percent imbued with Islamic values.
