Indonesia to Host International Conference on Hazardous Waste
Wednesday, 07 May, 2008 | 14:47 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Indonesia will host an international conference on hazardous waste on 23-27 June in Bali.

Rasio Ridho Sani, assistant deputy for management of hazardous waste from mining sector said the conference will help on waste management efforts.

Indonesia has been used as a place for other countries to dump their hazardous waste illegally although the government firmly forbids it.

Through the conference, the government will be guided to develop a national regulation on waste management.

Emma Rahmawati, the assistant deputy for hazardous waste management from the manufacturing and agro-industry sectors, said that five issues will be discussed at the conference which will be attended by 1,000 delegations from 170 countries.

First will be technical problems on handling waste by boat unpacking, electronic waste, and also about reusing, recycling, and recovering waste.

Second will be about regulations forbidding waste imports.

Third will be about increasing institutional cooperation with the chemical industry.

Fourth is strengthening regional cooperation, and fifth is about world forums on the importance of waste management in connection with human health.
