Not Necessary to Revive Ministerial Regulations for Independent Candidacy
Thursday, 08 May, 2008 | 12:53 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Head of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Abdul Hafiz Anshary said the independent candidacy can be in effect without revising two of the existing ministerial regulations. “It will be too long to wait for the revision,” he said at the KPU office in Jakarta, yesterday.

The Home Affairs Minister issued two regulations, No. 44/2005 about budget management for regional leaders and No. 6/2005 about selection, inaugurating, recruiting, and terminating regional leaders. The independent candidate will affect the approved budget, so the revision was considered necessary.

According to KPU member Andi Nurpati, the regional KPU does not allocate a budget for independent candidates. He discussed this matter with the Home Affairs Minister.

Andi said the independent candidates will increase the budget for the regional election as it will be held in two stages. “It will cost more,” he said.
