TEMPO Interaktif, Jakarta: In a discussion yesterday about women’s health, head of the Kalyanamitra Foundation, Rena Herdyani, said that the current regulation ignores the service for women’s reproductive health. “The Criminal Code and regulation still judge abortion as criminal without exception,” she said. She suggested that certain reasons be allowed, such as medical reasons, or rape as well as economic and psycho-social reasons.

Rena said that the government can provide a safe, qualified, and reachable service for abortion. She mentioned two million women in Indonesia have abortions every year. “Unsafe abortion increases the number of mothers’ deaths,” she said.
